Specification No. 8(a)

Anti- corrosive Treatment for Reinforcement Rods

SCOPE

This specification covers for reinforcement rods that are embedded in concrete used for water-retaining structures, in water treatment plants, effluent sumps, etc. in ordinary as well marine structures and in chemical plants where corrosion to metals take place faster. For durability of reinforcement in submerged structures or in severe saline atmosphere, Cathodic protection is recommended.

PROCEDURE

The reinforcement bars are to be provided with RustProof (available in a two-component pack), after the adhering rust on the rebars are properly cleaned, either by wire brush, sand blasting or scrubbing by sand paper. The quality or reinforcement bars, plain or torqued should also conform to its relevant specification. In case the quality of steel or any other factor is not upto the specification, the said rod should not be applied with RustProof. Howerver, only such rods which are fresh from the
rolling mill with exacting parameters should be used.

RUST PROOF pack to be used should also be within its shelf life. The powder and liquid pack should be opened and all the powder component should be poured into the liquid gradually and smoothly, using a mechanical stirrer all the time. The mixed material will be of a pasty consistency and it will have a pot life of one hour. So, using a brush with stiff bristles, RUSTPROOF should be applied on the pre-cleaned rebars. Normally one coat is enough, but in seveu conditions, two coats of RUSTPROOF should be applied. A thickness of 800 +/- 100 microns achieved per coat. The overlap coat should only be done after the first coat has dried. The coated rebars and stirrups should only be put to use, after it has dried completely.

The coated reinforcement bars should be tested and its efficacy certified by the contractor after signing the test report. The sample selected for such tests should be on a randam basis.
